SUMMER OF INDEPENDENCE

Last chance to apply for BUNAC work/travel programmes in the USA

There are still plenty of jobs available for young people looking to enjoy a summer of American independence on a BUNAC work and travel programme, but application deadlines are approaching fast and candidates should act now to avoid disappointment. There is currently a high demand for Summer Camp USA counsellors who can teach horse riding, tennis, water sports, outdoor pursuits or arts and crafts to groups of children, or have experience of working with special needs populations. Also still available are opportunities for students to work in a support role (kitchen, general maintenance, office, etc.) on the Kitchen and Maintenance Programme (KAMP) as well as lots of casual summer jobs all over the US waiting to be filled by Work America participants, provided they get their skates on.

Working on Summer Camp USA or KAMP is a fun, rewarding and affordable way to spend the summer. Applicants need to be aged 18 or over, available to fly to the US by the end of June, experienced in working with children for Summer Camp USA or in full-time study for KAMP. Contracts last for six to eight weeks and there is up to four weeks of travel time available after camp. Both programmes represent excellent value for money. The registration fee is a very affordable £70 and applicants are guaranteed an extremely competitive in-hand salary depending on their age and what sort of job they do. Food and accommodation on camp are provided free of charge. The cost of the airfare is loaned to applicants by BUNAC and then deducted from their wage at the end of the summer.

Work America, available to full-time students, offers complete flexibility to do almost any sort of work, anywhere in the US for up to four months between June and October. BUNAC’s Job Directory lists hundreds of summer jobs from employers all over America. Most are in East Coast summer resorts, including amusement parks, although the chance to seek more career-related work is available. Applicants can secure their place – and a copy of the Job Directory - with a deposit of £125 followed by a balance of £134 (or £90 for returning applicants). BUNAC’s optional Travel Package costs £450 and includes return flights on scheduled airlines from London to New York, representatives at the departure and arrival airports and the first night’s B&B accommodation in Manhattan.

Summer Camp USA applicants (experienced with children) need to book a place at a regional interview session during April and should visit www.bunac.org immediately or call BUNAC on 020 7251 3472 for a list of remaining interview dates. KAMP and Work America candidates (full-time students) can download application forms from the BUNAC website and return them by early May for KAMP or, for Work America, by May 19th latest.

BUNAC, the UK leader in overseas work and travel programmes, also offers working holidays in Canada, Australia and New Zealand and volunteering placements in Africa, Costa Rica, Peru and Cambodia.
